Sound mining

Sound mining is the process by which sounds are detected over an area and alerts sent back to a central location for monitoring. This might be gun shots, poachers, vehicles, alarms or even voices. The benefits of sound mining is that it typically works very well in scenarios where visibility is limited and therefore cameras are of limited use. It is also very good at detecting certain events. These events can be characterised and therefore isolated from a complex environment. Tracked vehicles as opposed to wheeled vehicles, small calibre as opposed to large calibre rounds.

As the sound libraries grow in sophistication, sound mining provides another very valuable sensor tool that is harder to defeat than many detection technologies. It is unlikely to provide the entire picture but when used in conjunction with other sensor types, it is a valuable tool.
